Spitfire replica to visit Cairns - Article by Nick Dalton, The Cairns Post, July 25, 2012
A two-seater full-size replica Spitfire is expected to land at Cairns Airport this morning in what is believed to be a first.
Engineer and pilot, Pat English, is hoping to land the plane at 10 am, weather permitting.
"When the two-seater full-size replica Spitfire lands history will be made," he said.
"It's the only full-size, airworthy, replica two-seater Spitfire in the world and built right here in Far North Queensland at Mareeba.
"It has done several test flights, landing at Mareeba Airport, but this will be its first time to Cairns."
Mr English said there were rebuilt Spitfires and a handful of smaller replicas, but none of which were full size.
He said English Engineering embarked upon the project to design and construct a full-size, two-seater Spitfire almost seven years ago.
"The ambitious project was designed to enable the development and then subsequent sale of Spitfire kits," Mr English said.
"Over the years there have been individuals and companies who have commenced similar projects, but none have progressed this far."
Subject to Air Services approval, the Spitfire will do a fly-past at 100 m down the runway, firing replica guns and then bank around and land. The airport rescue and firefighting service will welcome the aircraft with water cannons.
The Spitfire was a British fighter aircraft used in World War II.
